The Beez Kneez

Last year I took the class. A month or so ago I finally got back together with the instructor and took the test, and got the certification. I picked up the licence application a week later (though I haven't sent it in yet). Two weeks or so later, I went to a monthly Milwaukee And Waukeshau Beekeepers Association meeting, and met a beekeeper who collects old, beat-up pieces of hives.

For $60, we have a complete hive, only needing to be cleaned and maybe painted, and some new foundation sheets inserted, to be ready for beezes.

Next we order and pay for the beez, who will come when it is meteorologically auspicious, and then turn in and pay for the license. They will come and inspect where the hive is, and ask all the neighbors if it's okay with them, and then we get permission.


I' so excited! I just can't hide it!

My most recent experience with bees was when a colony formed inside the wall of a condo we were caring for. It made a local bee-keeper really happy, but honey down the insides of walls was really Not What We'd Hoped For. Still. I was happy to see wild bees Doing Their Thing.

Cool. That sounds really interesting. Any particular vegetation you're hoping the little beasties will feed off, or just whatever's in your area? Over here, beekeepers work quite hard for manuka honey, and charge a real premium for it.

We have a garden for the winged sprites to pollinate, plus there are many flowers in and around our house.

And within their 5-mile radius are urban gardens and flowering plants, shrubbery, and trees galore.

So: city honey. Nothing exotic.

You're close enough to get some, yes!

It's just the first year, so there won't be much, I don't think. But we'll keep in touch for when the amounts go up.
